My name is Serena and I am starting this blog to help others living with chemical sensitivities. In a world where we are bombarded with chemicals around every corner we need to have a safe chemical free place to come home to. I am here to give you ideas, products and DIY ideas to turn your home into a chemical free space. Everything from renovations materials to personal care products to cleaning products.
A little about me and my mission to start this blog:
At about the age of 16 I started having severe reactions to synthetically scented products such as perfumes and scented personal care products. My mom and my grandma both had the same problem with it even going as far as some natural scents such as flowers causing a reaction in them.
I had gone to many doctors and allergists to try to figure out why this was happening and what I could do about it. Most of the doctors didn’t believe me and I had to fight to get them to listen. And the allergists told me there was nothing they could do unless I brought in the products for them to do a scratch test with. I had tried anti-histamines only to find out that they didn’t work and the only thing I could do was to avoid situations where I may be exposed.
I worked at a few different companies in my 20’s and 30’s only to find that employers, while they were trying to help, they just didn’t understand and weren’t willing to implement any kind of scent-free or chemical-free policy.
In 2018 I finally found a doctor who believed me and I was sent to an allergist who knew all about these kind of sensitivities. I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Environmental Intolerances (a.k.a. Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) which is considered a disability. I still struggle at work though my current employer is much more sensitive to my issues and has been trying to help.
My home has become my sanctuary away from all the chemicals. While it is still not completely chemical free it is getting there. I have many more renovations to do but everything else, my cleaning products, my personal care products, are scent free and as chemical free as I can find. I have even started making some of my own products to use.
I hope to use this blog to educate and help others who have similar struggles. To help you find products, to link you with research on this topic and hopefully make your life more chemical free.
I hope you will join me on my journey into Living Chemical Free.
